About Us

At Greater Expectations Learning Center (GELC), we are committed to fostering a love for learning in a nurturing, engaging environment. Our philosophy is rooted in the constructivist model of progressive education, which encourages children to actively explore, create, and build meaning through hands-on experiences and social interactions.

Our Approach to Learning

We believe that children learn best when they are engaged in purposeful, intentional activities guided by knowledgeable and caring educators. That’s why we implement the HighScope Curriculum, which is based on the educational philosophies of John Dewey and Lev Vygotsky. This approach emphasizes the importance of:

  • Active learning – Children construct knowledge through play and exploration.
  • Social interaction – Collaboration helps strengthen problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Reflective thinking – Encouraging children to process and discuss their experiences enhances understanding.

Through structured play, guided learning, and meaningful social interactions, we help children develop the confidence and skills they need to become lifelong learners.

Our Creative Curriculum

We recognize that family plays a vital role in a child’s learning journey. Our center is designed to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere, where families are encouraged to be actively involved—whether through participation in activities, communication with teachers, or engagement in our classroom environment.

High-Quality Education Aligned with Standards

Our curriculum is thoughtfully aligned with:

  • Ohio Early Learning & Development Standards (for preschoolers
  • Common Core State Standards (for school-age children)

By integrating these standards into play-based learning experiences, we ensure that every child at GELC is academically, socially, and emotionally prepared for the next stage of their education.

We use “The Creative Curriculum” which is a comprehensive, researched-based curriculum designed to implement developmentally appropriate practices and offer responsive daily routines and meaningful experiences that nurture learning and development.

Our toddler 2 classroom will focus on creating a nurturing learning environment where your child can feel safe and secure. Children are able to learn and grow when they feel safe and cared for, are appropriately challenged and guided and have strong relationships with nurturing adults. That is our main objective to lay this foundation at an early age.

Our staff will work with your child’s individual needs to become fully potty trained if they are not already. We have developed a system that is sure to make potty training a rewarding experience for both parent and child. Our staff will implement lesson plans that will increase the children’s developing skills in a variety of age appropriate activities. Each morning and afternoon the children will participate in group time, where they will continue to work on recognizing shapes, colors, numbers, and letters. The children will be exploring the outside world with outside play time (weather permitting). The children will enjoy a wonderful playground with age appropriate equipment where they can climb, run, and ride bikes on our bike path.

Our Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten Rooms use “The Creative Curriculum” for Preschool which is a comprehensive, research-based curriculum that features exploration and discovery as a way of learning, enabling children to develop confidence, creativity, and lifelong critical thinking skills.

The Creative Curriculum® for Preschool features studies which are hands-on, project-based investigations relevant to the children’s everyday experiences. These studies tap into the children’s natural curiosity which then results in a fun and intentional learning environment. Our wonderful staff will assist your child in letter recognition, number recognition, one to one correspondence, patterning, early writing skills as well as recognizing and writing their name in print, and more. The children will participate in teacher facilitated lessons such as circle time, reading, writing, and math activities each day.
